Sustainability is an increasingly important consideration for South African businesses and professionals. The environmental comparison between paper and digital business cards is worth examining honestly.

The Paper Card Problem

Traditional paper business cards require trees, water, energy, and chemicals to produce. The majority of those cards are thrown away within a week. Laminated paper cards, which are common for premium finishes, are not recyclable in most municipal waste streams.

The NFC Card Reality

NFC cards are made from PVC, a plastic material. PVC production has its own environmental footprint, and PVC cards are not easily recycled. However, one NFC card lasts three to five years and handles unlimited taps versus thousands of paper cards over the same period.

The Honest Assessment

Neither option is perfect from an environmental standpoint. But the NFC card delivers dramatically more value per unit of resource used. Fewer cards produced, less waste generated, and a longer useful life make NFC the more sustainable choice between the two.
