How Many Times Can Someone Tap an NFC Business Card Before It Stops Working?

This question comes from a reasonable place. If the card gets used heavily at events and meetings, will the chip eventually wear out?

The Technical Specification

NTAG213 chips, which are used in Tappio cards, are rated for 100,000 write cycles. Read cycles, which is what happens every time someone taps your card, have no meaningful technical limit.

What This Means in Practice

Reading the chip, which is what every tap is, does not wear it out. The chip is not being rewritten with each tap. Even the write limit is effectively irrelevant for a business card since a card is programmed once and never reprogrammed.

The Honest Answer

There is no realistic tap limit for normal professional use. You could tap your Tappio card ten times per day for the entire card's physical life and the chip would not fail from over-tapping. The card will look worn before the technology does.
